A Victorian Christmas

Joplin’s newest holiday tradition, open 3 Friday evenings

Step into the glow of a Victorian Christmas. For three special Friday evenings, the Schifferdecker and Zelleken homes stay open after hours, long after our usual 5:00pm closing, so you can see these 1890s Murphysburg mansions by night in their Christmas finest.

Our opening night on November 27 features the official lighting ceremony, when the grounds are illuminated for the season. Come see the lights switch on, then wander the homes and enjoy the evening.

Highlights

• Open-house tours. Explore both historic homes at your own pace, decorated throughout in Victorian Christmas style.
• Tree displays by area organizations. Local organizations have decorated trees in a variety of Victorian-inspired themes, placed in rooms throughout the homes. Cast your vote for your favorite to help choose the Guest Favorite winner.
• Christmas cookie decorating station. Pick up a cookie and get creative.
• Make-and-take craft. Decorate a Victorian paper cornucopia to take home, a charming tree ornament in its day.
• Scavenger hunt. Search the homes for a nutcracker, a bell, a star, and more. Pick up a scavenger hunt sheet to get started.
• Victorian parlor games. Try your hand at dominoes, checkers, jacks, and other games families enjoyed by the fire in the 1890s.
• Mulled cider and hot cocoa. Warm up with a seasonal favorite.
• Photo station. Capture the evening against our decorated, lit-up grounds.
• Gift shop open. Find something special for the holidays.
