Celebrating Young Artists

On May 21, 2018, JHN honored the winners of the 2018 Joplin Fair Housing Month Poster Contest at the Edward Zelleken home. The six winners signed reproductions of their posters to be adhered to enhance the construction fence around the Schifferdecker and Zelleken properties during the summer. The contest was sponsored by the Community Housing Resource Board, and challenged fifth-graders at the Boys & Girls Club of Joplin to create a poster representing fair housing in their community. Winners included: 1st-  Landon Duke, 2nd-  Adalyn Osborn, 3rd-  Tianna Taylor, 4th-  Karlie Parker, 5th-  Rose Shepherd, and 6th-  Abigail Meeks.

The group of Boys & Girls Club fifth-graders were treated to an exclusive tour of the Zelleken home by Preservation Architect Michael Englebert Griffin, where they learned of the home’s historic past as Joplin’s first art center and the plans for its architectural restoration. “Who knows? Perhaps one of these students may be inspired to be the next Thomas Hart Benton…,” said Brad Belk, JHN Preservation Director and Curator.
